ELD Resources:

Picture
This Wiki has tons of resources, including PowerPoints and visuals, to aid in vocabulary acquisition and ELD.

Also on the same Wiki: a collection of picture cards from around the web. Excellent for vocabulary acquisition.

This chart would be a useful way to track ELD goals on a student-by-student basis:

Literacy/Biliteracy Resources

Multilingual Mania has lots of images, lessons, and other resources for supporting biliteracy in education.
WordPress is one of the highest quality blogging sites out there. Two aspects of this platform make it especially ideal for use in bilingual education. First, the platform can be downloaded and run without the Internet (ideal for situations where student information may be posted, say on a class site). It will run seamlessly with schools' intranet. Second, the platform has multiple options for plug-ins to make sites seamlessly bilingual. Clicking the link HERE will show a list of different ways to easily make a WordPress blog into a bilingual site, without much inconvenience to the creator or the site visitor.

Strategies for Parental Involvement

Picture
The most important way to involve parents is by communicating with them. If necessary, find a translator to make the call. Some parents prefer email or text due to different working hours or demands. Be sure to find out from parents how THEY prefer to be contacted--and do it early and often, with good news and bad!

A Human Library is an excellent way to bring parents and community members into the classroom. This idea would work best in a social studies classroom, but could easily be revised slightly to work in other content areas.

In a classroom Living Library, human beings from the greater community serve as "books." These individuals might be parents, professionals, artists, or simply someone with a great story to share. To host a living library day, the teacher must contact several individuals (preferably with life circumstances that fit thematically with the content being taught in the class) and arrange for them to come to school. Students then interview ("read") the individuals to learn more about their topics of study in an authentic way.

This idea is especially ideal for ELLs, who not only get structured oral practice through the interview process, but also might be able to interact with individuals from their communities and others to gain a wider breadth of experience speaking in English.
