Apps for ELL Students:
SoundCloud allows students to create, share, and discover music. This online resource showcases From artists around the world, in many different languages. ELLs can benefit from SoundCloud in a number of ways. First, they can find and listen to music in their heritage language and/or target language. Second, the students can use SoundCloud to record their own music or speech. This application is useful to ELLs because it can become an authentic form of assessing language skills.
Fotobabble is an online application that allows users to add vocals to images. In the classroom, this app can be used as a quick check of understanding (for example, using describing forms about an image). It can also become part of a larger multimedia project for ELLs that allows students to showcase speaking and artistic abilities.
Voki is a somewhat silly application that has great potential for ELLs. This app allows the user to create an avatar using templates and then record their own voice as the voice of the avatar. The app also will 'speak' print text in 25 languages.
Quizlet is one of the best academic game/study game applications on the web. Content can be created by teachers or students. Quizlet offers a variety of flashcard, matching, fill-in the blank, and other challenges to help students learn in different styles.
